Well after what seemed like forever, we welcomed back the girls for the start of a New Year and a new block of training. Later in January we have the FA Pokemon Futsal York qualifiers, so watch this space for more details.

We had nine players come and try Futsal for the first time – welcome Erin, Imogen, Maisie, Isla, Leila, Kaydyn, Emily, Jessica and Georgia, we hope you had fun and we look forward to seeing you all again very soon!

With the largest ever number in the younger group, we started with a quick game of tig to get everyone moving about – even the coaches couldn’t tag everyone! We then split the groups into U10s and U12s and played some 1v1 ones across the court. Could you beat your opponent and stop the ball in any of the corner squares? We challenged the players to see if they could use a trick, pace or just clever thinking to beat their partner. We finished with some quick fire games – 1 goal and the winner stays on. The watching team had to be quick to not get caught out.

Player of the week for the younger group was Lacey – we have been so impressed by this young lady, she has started full of confidence and showed real determination to give her best each and every week. Best of all, she does everything with a smile on her face! We have high hopes of her progressing in the club and look forward to seeing how she goes in the future. Amazing start to your futsal journey, well played, Lacey!

The older group started with some 2v2 across the court. We got the players to think about using the depth and width of the area and this made defending either easier or harder. We also challenged them to play quick, not to wait for the opposition to get set. We moved on to some full court games in which one player from each side was fixed in the final third of the court. The players started to think about the longest, safest pass they could make and how quick could they find the highest player.

Player of the week for the older group was Ava – what a fantastic player and one we are so proud to be a member of our club. She has all the attributes to be one of the very best – pace, control, passing and finishing – Ava has it all. Since joining, Ava has developed so quickly and we can’t wait until she is old enough to play for the ladies’ team. Awesome Ava, the future is oh so very bright!

I think it is safe to say today was mayhem! We had 44 girls playing futsal, the most ever on a Sunday! Thank you to the girls from Bishopthorpe U10s for coming down, it was brilliant to see you all again. My personal highlight today was the the behaviour and support from all the parents. I hear so much about how bad some can behave, especially at grassroots football matches. Well, I can honestly say we must have the best parents ever, as all I hear is encouragement and praise. Thank you to each and everyone of you for the amazing support you provide.
