Numbers were low this week with various trips away, grand parents’ visits, big brothers’ cup finals and the dreaded Covid. That said, the girls who trained really did give us everything.

The younger group had the privilege of being coached by Fabinho, futsal legend in and around York. Fabinho was the captain at York Futsal, and is now coaching at Sambarca Futsal in York. He started the girls with some ball skills, and they really tried so hard to match him!

As a small experiment we made the futsal court slightly smaller this week so the girls didn’t have to run as much. Coach Chris asked the players to be confident when they had the ball. He asked them to try really hard not to just kick the ball away. Wow, and did the players respond! We saw a huge step forward by everyone – players having a touch to control the ball, travelling with the ball, passing the ball to teammates and finally plenty of shots on target.

This young group just keeps getting better and better – we can’t help but wonder how good they would have been if we could have coached them for the whole year…

A huge welcome back to Ellie R, she has been battling a long injury and made only her third appearance of the season. We missed you Ellie, glad you are on the mend!

The older group worked on some recovery play today. We started with a full court game in which the teams went 1v1, 2v1, 2v2 until 4v4 on court. There were no throw-ins or corners, as soon as the ball went dead we started with the opposition’s goalkeeper. This session is hard work and not one of the players stopped working or gave up. Fantastic from so many players but a huge well done to Madison, who is new to futsal and we saw what a good players she really is.

Special mention to Alice, she hurt her knee playing football this week, but she still came along and supported her teammates, as well as making sure Coach Chris got all his decisions right!

The older group finished with a 3 team quick change game. If you scored you stayed on, but the game started immediately, so you had to be on your toes all the time. We moved this on to if your team kicked the ball out, you left the court. Lots of confusions and big smiles from everyone.

Another fab session from these amazing young ladies. It is such a pleasure to work with a group who never complain, never stop smiling and listen and do their very best each and every week. A huge thank you from all the coaching staff.

Player of the week for the younger group was Sofia – This young lady is so confident, always has an answer and loves to demonstrate what she is talking about – we love this level of confidence. Throw in the fact that she is a half decent player and we can’t wait to see how she develops. Well done, ‘FiFi’, you are a superstar in the making!

Player of the week for the older group was Emily-Sue – From day one, and yes she has been with us since the very first session, Emily-Sue has always given us her very best. She has taken some time to get used to all the new players in the group but today she showed she is a very good futsal player. Her touch, passing and now her tackling and shooting make her one of the best in the group. Top player and fantastic young lady!
