Well, another week and our first ever competitive futsal match for the older group.  Even though it was a friendly, the nerves were showing for some of the players, and they just wanted to get started.  But first, we had the younger group to coach!

After a fun warm up, run by Tegan, Kimberly and Katie, we continued to work with the younger group on running with the ball.  We wanted them to be in control of the ball as much as possible.  We had 2 rectangles laid out on the court, and to score a point, players had to run from the outside, through the middle rectangle, and stop the ball under control on the opposite side.  All this, without getting tackled by the players in the middle.  We challenged them to run at different angles across the court, stop the ball in the middle and even turn round and go back the way they came.  There were some great techniques on display, great to watch!

We finished with a game in which the court was divided up into different scoring zones.  The closer you got to the opposition’s goal, the more points you scored.  You got double points for a first time and toe poke finish.  Coach Chris’s team ran away to 6-0 lead with goals from Claire, Adelaide and Amelia.  But Katie’s team came roaring back with goals from Holly, Maja and Faith.  It was end to end with players making sure they got as close to the goal as possible before shooting.  All the girls played brilliant, with lots of smiles so Coach Chris treated them to some pink doughnuts!

Player of the week for the Under 11s was Amelia. She ran really hard today, and never gave up. She did some great running with the ball in the first part of the session and played fantastic in the match.  Well done, Amelia.

On to the match – we wanted the girls to firstly enjoy playing a competitive match, no point playing if you don’t have fun!  We worked on some simple out of possession and in possession ideas.  We have less than 10 hours of futsal coaching with some of these girls, so it was always going to be a learning experience.
