On Sunday 15 January 2023 Bootham Futsal Club – York welcomed 5 teams to take part in the first round of the FA Pokemon Futsal Cup. This is the fifth year we have hosted this tournament and it is growing year on year. With 39 fantastic young ladies representing their clubs we knew it was going to be a good day.

Bootham Futsal Club were represented by Isabelle S (captain), Eady M, Lily-Rose W, Amelia H, Ella H, Billie A, Raya S and Jessica R. With no recognised goalkeeper in the side they all took turns in playing in goal.

The games were 10 minutes long and everyone playing everyone, below is the final league table:

There was so much talent on display from every team and the games were end to end with so many near misses we lost count. Huge respect to all the goalkeepers, who made save after save after save and kept their teams in pretty much every match.

Bootham, who finished joint runners up with Huntington, had their goals scored by Jessica, Isabelle and Billie. On the day they played some fab futsal and not one player let them down. They all worked their socks off and only lost their last game, otherwise they were simply brilliant.

Player Of The Tournament For Bootham: Billie A – she is such a fantastic young lady – she never gave up and whether in goal or playing out she was always involved. Her tackling and determination were first rate, as well as her goalscoring, and she showed so much desire to get to the ball first. Fab performance!

Huge congratulations to Wigginton Grasshoppers U10s who won the tournament, unbeaten all day and didn’t concede a goal. They go into the next round and represent North Riding County FA sometime later in the year.

Final Thoughts Of A Coach – Well, I’m shattered, but still smiling! When we hosted the U10 tournament for the first time we had to play against ourselves to get a game. Today we had 5 other amazing teams come along and play the best U10s futsal we have ever seen. So much confidence on the ball, so much desire to make tackles, great goalkeeping and, boy, some of the shooting was scary! The level shown by all the teams was breathtaking for such young ladies and pretty much every game could have gone either way.

From a Bootham point of view I was so proud of the way the girls kept battling in every game. So many times they went behind but came back to win or draw a match. Every player worked their socks off and not one of them gave up in any games.

A huge thank you to all the visiting teams, their coaches and parents and Suzy, Paul and Aide for their constant amazing support. The very best of luck to Wigginton Grasshoppers U10s in the next round, go do the city proud!
