After two wins from their opening two matches, the Bootham girls already knew they had secured a place in the semi-finals. However, today was about finishing the group stage in style and ensuring they remained top of the table. In theory, topping the group would provide a more favourable semi-final draw, but everyone knew that no semi-final is ever easy.

With qualification already guaranteed, Bootham rotated their starting line-up once again, giving valuable minutes to every player in the squad. It was an opportunity not only to gain match experience but also to create lasting memories as part of the team’s journey.

Sometimes players don’t agree with a coach’s lineup decisions or tactical approach, and honestly, I have no problem with that. As coaches, we make judgment calls based on what we see and what we think might happen, but we’re not always right. I’ve always told players: prove me wrong, show me on the court.

Today, Daisy did exactly that. A huge thank you to her for responding in the best possible way—with a superb performance and a fantastic goal to top it off. Outstanding effort and a great reminder of why competition and belief in yourself are so important.

As a coach, I’ve been involved in games where the result meant very little, and motivating players to perform at the required level has been a real challenge. Today, however, could not have been more different.

A goal with the very first kick set the tone. Even the setback of a dubious penalty failed to dent the desire, commitment, and determination of this group. They simply got back to work, displaying their futsal with masterful poise and confidence.

Sometimes, as a coach, you can do nothing more than sit back and watch your team perform. Today was one of those days. Midway through the game, the team put together a passage of around 25 consecutive passes—simply brilliant.

The next game will be incredibly difficult. The players will need to find another 10% and raise their level again against a very physical and talented Finnish side. They will go into that game as underdogs, but today we will enjoy this performance and celebrate the fact that they finished top of their group: unbeaten, with 10 goals scored and only 2 conceded.

For now, let the players enjoy these moments. They have earned them.
