On Saturday 21 March, Bootham Ladies hosted Maidenhead United in the latest round of the National Futsal Series Tier 2. It marked Bootham’s first home fixture in York since November, adding extra significance to the occasion. Following a narrow defeat to Southampton in their previous outing, and a disappointing loss to Maidenhead earlier in the season, the team were eager to return to winning ways.

The stakes were clear for the hosts, victory by more than three goals would see them return to the top of the league table. With recent results elsewhere going in their favour, Bootham knew the title race was still just within reach and were determined to keep the pressure on heading into the final stages of the season.

Bootham were once again without several key players, with Nikki Brown, Jess Barnes, and Elisabeth Craven all unavailable, and a late drop out from captain Ellie Whittaker due to illness. However, there was a welcome boost as Jess Baker, who took the captains armband, and Charlotte Broad returned to the squad. The match also marked a special moment for the club, as talented teenager Hannah Block made her first-team debut after progressing through the Bootham Academy.

Bootham

1st Half

With just five players, Maidenhead arrived with a clear mission: survive. They dropped deep, packed their D, and waited, patient and disciplined, ready to strike on the counter. For Bootham, it was a test of nerve as much as skill. From the first whistle, the pattern was relentless. Bootham pressed, probed, and dominated every inch of the court. Chances came early, with Broad and Baker both threatening, but the breakthrough would not come. Elliott thought she had it twice in a frantic goalmouth scramble, only to be denied by a goalkeeper who refused to yield.

Then came a sudden reminder of the danger. Maidenhead broke sharply, forcing Samson into a stunning full stretch save to keep the game alive. Bootham responded immediately. Smith went close, Eustance drove forward, and the pressure built, wave after wave. And then, against everything the game had shown, Maidenhead struck. A quiet, almost harmless chance somehow found its way in. 1–0. Silence. Disbelief.

Bootham’s response was fierce. They surged forward, faster, sharper, more desperate. Then came the moment. The move of the half. Eustance and Elliott combined brilliantly, slicing through the defence to find Block in space. One touch. Strike. The sound of impact. Off the post. Out. Gasps from the sideline.

It felt impossible. Still Bootham came. Broad went close twice more. The pressure was suffocating, the equaliser felt inevitable, but it never arrived. As the whistle blew for half time, Bootham were left staring at the scoreboard, wondering how they were behind and whether this was going to be one of those days.

2nd Half

At the start of the second half, it was clear Bootham had found their rhythm. More pace, more movement, more belief, and they looked like a completely different team. Almost immediately, they drew level. Eustance threaded a perfect pass to Smith in the D, and she finished with aplomb to make it 1–1.

The hosts were opening up, space appearing in pockets, and chances began to flow. Eustance went close, then Smith, and finally Elliott, each probing the Maidenhead defence with relentless intent. Their persistence paid off when Broad put Bootham in front after the goalkeeper had saved her first effort.

Bootham were unstoppable. Elliott added a third, smashing the ball in from just inside her own half. The goal of the game followed when Baker found Smith, who curled an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net, pure class and precision.

Maidenhead grabbed a second on the break, but Bootham refused to let the game slip. Collins and Block applied constant pressure, suffocating the Maidenhead defence and preventing any momentum from building. Late on, Broad grabbed her second from a well-worked corner, and top scorer Eustance lofted the ball home from her own half.

Drama struck in the closing moments when Samson saw a controversial red card for a late tackle, leaving the team momentarily rattled. But from the resulting free kick, with the final touch of the game, Eustance rolled the ball home from halfway to complete a dominant Bootham second half performance and cap a remarkable comeback.

A proud coach spoke to us after the game, with Chris saying: “That was a very mature performance from the ladies today. We knew we had to be patient and wait for our chances. With only five players available, we anticipated the type of game plan Maidenhead would employ, dropping deep into their own half, looking to capitalise on set plays or hit us on the counter. We knew we would have a lot of the ball, but it was important to stay patient. I told the players the game would be won in the second half, and after the break they responded brilliantly.”

He was also keen to credit the opposition: “Huge credit to Maidenhead. They travelled a long way, gave everything, and really made us work for the win. Like us, they were missing several key players, so we knew we had a chance, but full credit to them for making it such a competitive game today.”

When asked about Hannah’s performance, he added: “She is another one of our talented teenagers who has come through the academy. She has been patient waiting for her opportunity and really impressed today. She didn’t look out of place at all and will only get better with more game time.”

Chris finished by looking ahead to the title race: “This win keeps the pressure on Manchester at the top. They have two difficult away games to come, so the league is not done and dusted just yet. We have two more home games, and we must do our best to win both and see what the other team does. Huge thanks to everyone who supported us today, it was great to be back playing at home. Let’s hope for many more spectators in the final two games of the season.”

Match Highlights:

Player of the Match — selected by Coach Michael — was Heather Smith – She delivered a dominant performance for Bootham, excelling both in and out of possession. Heather created numerous opportunities for her team and capped off her display with two superbly taken goals. She has really matured over the course of the season and is every bit the England Development player she’s shaping up to be. A top, top performance today.
